I Work With What I Have
Installed at Chicago Cultural Center February -September 2022
"I Work With What I Have" is an immersive, three-channel animated installation.
As an artist, animator, and experimental musician, I often utilize the logic of music to inform my animations. I am specifically interested in the way instrumental music and improvisation make meaning, and if it is possible for moving images to work in the same way. In this installation I created a spatial and visual experience that is visual music in itself, building a similar kind of affect as one might get while listening to instrumental music.
Working with moving images I could get meaning via narrative, through language, which then creates emotion based on the narrative, or as in this case, I can make work that evokes emotion through tension and dynamics, work that creates affect not tied to a specific story; but tied to what is evoked within the viewer. This work starts with affect.
I also make the seating for my projected installations. As people are seated on these pieces and surrounded by the animations, they are viewing the work from within, becoming part of the piece itself.
